Trial and Exile

The true love Bruno feels for God makes him firm and demanding toward the Church.

He lives in a historical period characterized by the War of the Investitures, or better the valiant battle of the Church to release herself from laical power, with regard to the appointment of bishops and abbots.

The appointment of the new pastor Manasse stirred a new storm within the Church of Reims. Manasse governed the Church more as a feudal ruler than as a bishop.

The war against Manasse lasted four years during which Bruno and his friends lost everything, property, positions and offices. They were forced into exile at the Count Ebal of Roucy.
