The Arrival in Calabria

Meanwhile Henry IV, secular enemy of the Pope, arrives to Rome. Urban II is forced to run, Bruno follows him. After being in Capua, Salerno and Benevento, in 1090 they take shelter in Calabria as guests of the Normans, who have recently conquered the region. Calabria, however lacerated it was by war, was already the centre of a thriving monastic life tied to the Oriental Byzantine tradition.
